On August 7th 1987 In Dartmouth Nova Scotia Troy and Trina celebrated the birth of their first child. His name is Sidney Crosby. At the tender age of 2 1/2 Sidney began playing hockey in the basement of his parents home. On the right is a photo of a young Sidney. His father painted the floor white and added red and blue lines. At the tender age of 3 Sidney laced up his first pair of skates and ventured out onto the ice.
Sidney liked to practice his shot in the basement of his parents home. As you can tell from the photo on the right Sidney liked to practice on the family dryer. Sidney was only 7 years old when he gave his first newspaper interview. At the age of 14 he gave his first newspaper interview.
A photo of the dryer Sidney used to use for target practice. It has hundreds of small dents and puck marks all over it.

Sidney was so much better at hockey then other boys his own age. As you can tell from the photo on the left he had many awards at a young age. Being the best had its drawbacks. If he wanted to compete with players of his calibre he had to play with older boys. At the tender age of 13 he was accepted to join a Midget AAA team, but was banned from playing by the provincial hockey body who believed he was too young. His Father was quoted as saying " It was cruel what they did to him. They treated him like he was a criminal."
At the age of 14 Sidney joined the Dartmouth Subways. He played 74 games that year and scored 95 goals. He also added 98 assists and finsihed the season with 193 points. That year his team won 61 games while only losing 17 times.

The Dartmouth Subways went on to play in the 2002 Air Canada Cup in Bathurst New Brunswick. The team to beat were the Tisdale Trojans. Unfortunatley the Trojans were too strong and defeated the Subways 6-2. Sidney managed 1 goal in the game, his 11th, which also led the Tournament. Sidney finished out the Tournament as the MVP and Top Scorer. I am sure he would have been happier with the 2002 Air Canada Cup Championship though. After an outstanding season with the Subways Sidney had to make a difficult decision.
Sidney wanted to stay in Nova Scotia and play hockey for the Halifax mooseheads as an underage player. Unfortunatley he was not allowed and decided to go to Shattuck-St. Mary's prep school in Minnesota. In 57 games 15 year old Sidney Crosby scored an amazing 72 goals while adding 90 assists for 162 points. I do believe he set scoring records with Shatuck-St. Mary's for most goals, assists and points. Please correct me if I am wrong. Sidney also led his high school team to the national title.

The summer of 2003 was very big for Sidney. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League held their draft on June 7th and the Rimouski Oceanic had the first pick. They chose Sidney Crosby. As a rookie in the Q he played extremely well. Sidney played ih 59 games as a 16 year old and managed 54 goals, 81 assists for 135 points. Along the way he captured several Awards in the QMJHL. He won the RDS Trophy, Michel Briere Trophy, Paul Dumont Trophy as well as the Jean Belliveau Trophy. He was also named to the All Rookie Team and First All-Star Team. He also won several Awards in the Canadian Hockey League including Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. You can read more about his Awards on my Stats page.
Sidney was also invited to play for Team Canada at the 2003 World Junior Tournament. He was the only player under 18 on the squad. On December 28, 2003 Crosby scored his first goal of the world junior hockey championship in a 7-2 win over Switzerland, becoming the youngest player ever to score for the team at age 16 years, 4 months, 24 days. The puck from Sidney's record making goal is in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Unfortunatley Team Canada came up short and Sidney and the rest of the team had to settle for a Silver medal.

The following season was a little different for Sidney. Again he led the QMJHL and the CHL in scoring. Again he was named MVP and was a First Team All-Star. Sidney was again selected to play for Team Canada at the World Junior Tournament. This year Team Canada won Gold. His Rimouski Oceanics team also won the QMJHL Championship and went on the the Memorial Cup against the #1 ranked team in the country, the London Knights. Unfortunatley the Knights were too strong as they defeated Rimouski in the Finals.
The summer was very busy for Sidney as he did a lot of travelling because of his endorsement deals. I had the pleasure of going to see Sidney in Dartmouth and managed to get a photo autographed as did my son. I wished Sidney luck playing with the Bruins. He laughed. I could dream couldn't I? Soon the NHL was going to hold their draft lottery to see who was going to have the 1st overall pick. The winner was the Pittsburgh Penguins. On July 30, 2005 the NHL made it officiall as the Penguins selected Sidney as the 1st overall pick.

Sidney joined the Penguins and Mario Lemieux immediately took him under his wing. Mario and his family invited Sidney to stay with them and he accepted. All he had to do was look after their children on occasion. He enjoyed that as he played hockey with them. Unfortunatley for Mario he had to retire early in the season due to health concerns. Crosby took over as the leader fo the team and had a remarkable season. He would have been a shooin for the Calder Trophy as top rookie if not for two other sensations rookies, Alexander Ovechkin and Dion Phaneuf. In the end Ovechkin edged out Sid as the top rookie.
Sidney Crosby played 81 games in his first NHL season and finished with 39 goals and 63 assists for 102 points. He recorded his first point, an assist, against Martin Brodeur on October 5, 2005. Three days later on October 8, 2005 he recorded his first goal against Hannu Toivonen. On December 16, 2005 coach Michel Therrien name him an Alternate Captain. Don Cherry was upset by this saying Sidney had done nothing to earn the position. On April 13, 2006, after scoring one goal and three assists in a 5-3 win over the New York Rangers , Crosby broke Mario Lemieux's franchise record for assists by a rookie. Lemieux recorded 57 assists in his rookie year; Crosby finished with 63. Four days later against the New York Islanders , Crosby scored his 100th point at the last home game of the season. He finished with 102, two ahead of Lemieux's 1984-85 franchise record for points by a rookie.

Although Sidney had a great rookie season the Penguins did not. They only won 22 games and finished last in the Eastern Conference. The Penguins had some great young talent and more was on the way as Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Stall joined the team over the summer.
The 2006-07 season was great for Sidney Crosby. He won the Hart Memorial Trophy, Lester B. Pearson Award and the Art Ross Trophy. He also became the youngest Captain in NHL history and the youngest player to be named to the 1st All-Star Team. Crosby signed a five-year $43.5 million dollar contract extension.

The 2007-08 season was a big test for the Penguins as Sidney was injured on Jan. 18, 2008. He suffered a high ankle sprain and missed a total of 28 games. Fortunately for the Penguins Evgeni Malkin stepped up as the team won the Atlantic Division. The Penguins are currently in the playoffs.
